Community Veterinary Clinic: Our Blueprint for the Future

The Challenge & Our Solution

It is nearly impossible to recruit a veterinarian to an area rather than to a specific veterinary hospital. To break this cycle, we are building a clinic that is community-owned. This ensures that veterinary care remains a permanent fixture in our region, regardless of future ownership or veterinary turnover.

The Model: How It Works

Through over three years of close consultation with the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO), we developed a dual-corporation model designed for sustainability and balance.

Community Veterinary Clinic

Veterinary Medicine Prof. Corp.

  • Veterinarian as Facility Director

  • Veterinarian focuses on medical aspects only

  • Clinical and patient care

Not-for-Profit Management Corp.

  • Run by Practice Manager

  • Handles business administration and finances

  • Marketing and human resources

Why this model?

It allows our future Facility Director (and all Staff Veterinarians) to focus entirely on what they do best—medicine—while leaving the exhausting administrative, HR, and facility management tasks to a dedicated practice management team.

Road map to Launch: Our Next Steps

Building a clinic from the ground up requires a meticulous approach. Here is the roadmap we are actively executing

Timeline

Our current focuses are: Business planning, location scouting, and early-stage recruitment.

While a concrete timeline depends on finalizing our business plan, we are aiming to have the clinic in the construction and equipping phases by 2028.

The Bigger Picture

This is a massive undertaking, but we are committed to establishing a permanent, long-term solution to the veterinary care shortage we face.  Once we establish our Clinic we will also be ready to mentor veterinary students, showing them the beauty in practicing veterinary medicine rurally.

Beyond our own borders, we believe this framework can serve as a scalable blueprint for other rural communities across the country facing the exact same crisis. We aren't just building a clinic; we are building a model for the future.
